Las Cruces Man Dies In Fire

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – David N. Halpern, the man found Friday morning in a residential fire on Dr. King Way, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces.

Halpern, 46, was the sole occupant of the home. Las Cruces firefighters discovered him, unconscious, just inside the front door of the residence. Firefighters and paramedics attempted to revive him at the scene and while en route by ambulance to the hospital. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at MMC.

No other injuries were reported.

At 9:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, Las Cruces firefighters were called to the structure fire at 2355 Dr. King Way. A neighbor, who was outside at the time, noticed smoke coming from the rear of the home. The fire was contained to the home's rear bedroom and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Preliminary information leads investigators to believe that the fire was accidental in nature though they have yet to determine the exact source of ignition. Fire investigators noted that the home did not appear to have working smoke detectors or a fire suppression system.

As is standard procedure, investigators from the Las Cruces fire and police departments are looking into the incident.
