Las Cruces Man Pleads Guilty In Football Player's Death

A Las Cruces man who pleaded guilty to a charge in the 2011 death of a high school football player has been sentenced to six years in prison.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that 26-year-old Andrew Garcia Martinez had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in the February 2011 attack on Jerry Zamarripa.

Authorities say Zamarripa was struck in the ribs and head with a golf club by Martinez as Zamarripa was leaving an underage drinking party at a Las Cruces home.

Judge Douglas R. Driggers sentenced Martinez to six years in prison and gave him credit for the two years he has already spent in jail.

The 18-year-old later died of a severe brain injury.

Zamarripa played football for Onate High School.
