New Mexico – A retired federal law enforcement official from Las Cruces is running for the Republican nomination for state auditor.
Errol Chavez had earlier announced his candidacy for land commissioner, but Republican Party chairman Harvey Yates Jr. announced Tuesday that Chavez was recruited to run in the auditor's race.
Yates says Chavez's investigative and administrative experience qualify him to serve as the state's next auditor.
During his three decades at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Chavez conducted money laundering investigations, supervised several hundred agents and directed the administration's policy implementation in Europe, Latin America and the United States.
Chavez is a graduate of the University of New Mexico.
