Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of breaking into and burglarizing a neighbor’s home Thursday morning.

Hector Samuel Gonzalez Jr., 26, of the 600 block of north 6th Street, is charged with felony counts of residential burglary and breaking and entering, and misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and larceny.

Police were dispatched to a reported burglary in progress at a home on the 1300 block of Brownlee at about 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 9. Officers arrived to find a broken window and two men inside the home.

The two men, one of them being Gonzalez, exited the home and were taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators learned that Gonzalez broke a back window to the residence to gain entry. He then exited the front door and removed a purse from the residence. He allegedly took the purse back to his home and then encouraged a relative to return with him to the residence he burglarized.

Gonzalez allegedly and falsely told the relative that he was given permission to remove items from the home.

The two men entered the home and police arrived shortly thereafter.

Gonzalez’s relative was not charged with a crime.

Gonzalez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
