Las Cruces Man Suspected of Stabbing, Restraining Girlfriend

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of stabbing his girlfriend, and holding her and another woman against their will during an incident that occurred Thursday.

Jarvaughn Lamont Coleman, 38, of the 5100 block of Isaacks Lane, is charged with a second-degree felony count of kidnapping, third-degree felony counts of aggravated battery against a household member and tampering with evidence, a fourth-degree felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of battery against a household member.

Las Cruces Police investigators learned that Coleman and his 19-year-old girlfriend have been in a relationship for three months and were staying at 1550 W. Picacho Ave. The woman indicated to investigators that, sometime Thursday, Sept. 7, Coleman began punching her and accusing her of infidelity. Coleman is also accused of arming himself with a fixed-blade knife, stabbing her leg once and threatening to kill the woman while he prevented her from leaving.

Investigators learned that, sometime Thursday, Coleman took the woman to a friend’s home on the 1000 block of McFie Avenue. Coleman allegedly hid the fixed-blade knife near that home and armed himself with a serrated knife. They then went back to the west Picacho address.

Later in the day, the woman was able to call a friend for help and Coleman walked her to a nearby store on Picacho. Upon seeing the friend, Coleman allegedly slapped the woman before leaving. The friend then transported the 19-year-old woman to a local hospital where police were first notified of the incident. The woman’s injuries are not life-threatening.

After learning details of the incident, Las Cruces police went to 1550 W. Picacho shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday and attempted to locate Coleman. Investigators learned that, as officers arrived, Coleman ordered three occupants inside the home and physically restrained a 26-year-old woman by grabbing her by the throat and squeezing to keep her from talking.

After about one hour, the woman escaped the residence and the two men inside physically pushed Coleman out the front door to LCPD officers who had surrounded the home.

Coleman was arrested Thursday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
