Las Cruces Man Suspected of Strangling Girlfriend During Argument

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of strangling his girlfriend and preventing the woman from leaving his residence.

Leevi Duran, 25, of the 200 block of Three Crosses Avenue, is charged with one third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and a fourth-degree felony count of false imprisonment.

Investigators learned that, at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, Duran and his girlfriend were inside the home when they got into an argument over a cell phone. As the woman tried leaving the bedroom, Duran allegedly prevented her exit and pushed her onto the bed.

Investigators learned that Duran put the woman into a headlock that restricted her breathing. The woman responded by biting Duran’s arm. Duran is also suspected of trying to place duct tape over the woman’s mouth.

Duran was arrested Thursday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
