Las Cruces Mayor Attends U.S. Conference Of Mayors Meeting

Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima

Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima attended the 83rd annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in San Francisco, which wrapped up on Monday.

Miyagishima talked with us about about a variety of issues covered at the conference…including energy independence and immigration.  He says there’s a need to balance increased energy production with climate protection and he says it’s important to recognize the great potential of immigrants to not only be employees…but also employers…creating jobs and boosting the economy.

The Mayor says Las Cruces is doing well on another initiative discussed at the conference…urban mobility.  He says the city is benefiting from efforts to connect neighborhoods via streets as well as multi-use walking paths.

Miyagishima is completing his second four-year term this year.  The Mayor’s seat will be on the ballot this fall, along with three city council seats.  Miyagishima says he’ll make an announcement about whether or not he’ll seek a third term at a later date….but he would not be more specific.
