Las Cruces Murder Sentence

Las Cruces – A Las Cruces man has been sentenced to life in prison plus five years for first-degree murder.

Judge Fernando Macias sentenced 27-year-old Hector Flores Serna Jr. Monday after Serna was convicted of fatally shooting 49-year-year-old George Vargas on July 5, 2009 at a Las Cruces residence.

Police say Serna went to Vargas' home to complete a drug deal. The two argued and Serna pulled out a gun and shot Vargas once in the head.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports a jury convicted Serna Feb. 11. Serna will be eligible for parole in 35 years.
