Las Cruces To Offer Free Internet Classes

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – The City of Las Cruces Branigan Library is hosting free internet classes, part of Fast Forward New Mexico, a program from the state of New Mexico and the Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico. A celebration to launch the program will be held on Saturday, January 22nd from 11:00 am to 1:00pm at the library, 200 E. Picacho.

The Fast Forward New Mexico program is funded by a three-year grant bringing free internet classes to 16 communities around the state. The goal is to raise public understanding of the benefits of internet access and increase citizen's skills to help them participate in economic development and educational opportunities. Free classes will be held from February to March. Instructors will be available at the launch celebration and residents can sign up for classes.

"We're very happy to partner with this program. This will only expand the library's own computer classes, it's a win-win for residents," says Lynette Schurdevin, Library Administrator. "With our current technology, college courses and job applications are available online, this is a great way to give our residents a chance to learn and know the internet well so they can take advantage of these opportunities."

Currently New Mexico ranks 46th in the nation for the percentage of residents who use the internet. The state also ranks 36th in availability of broadband telecommunications.
