Las Cruces – A Monday morning arrestee faces additional charges after he escaped custody, physically assaulted an officer and led police on a brief foot pursuit.
Michael Scott, 21, who is believed to be homeless, is charged with one count of breaking and entering, battery on a peace officer and escape from police custody.
At around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, Las Cruces Police arrested Scott after he broke into a friend's apartment on the 1800 block of west Picacho Avenue. Scott was seen driving away from the scene and was eventually stopped near Mayfield High School where he was handcuffed and detained in the back of a police unit.
As officers attempted to remove Scott from the back of the police unit, the suspect slipped a wrist through the handcuffs and struck an officer before escaping to a field near the high school. Officers quickly caught up to Scott who was re-apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.
The LCPD officer received relatively minor injuries during the incident.
Scott is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $20,000.
