Las Cruces Police: Fewer Crashes Along North Main Street

The increased presence of police along north Main Street appears to be limiting the number of motor vehicle crashes between Interstate 25 and the Spitz Avenue/Solano Drive intersection.

In the first 16 days of June, police responded to only four crashes along that stretch of north Main Street. LCPD investigated at least 19 motor vehicle crashes along that stretch of roadway in April and another 28 in May.

Las Cruces Police began a month-long traffic safety operation along north Main Street June 1 to combat aggressive and distracted drivers, both of which are considered factors in the increased number of crashes.

From June 1-16, LCPD Traffic officers issued 12 citations to drivers who were using a cell phone. Another 14 citations went to motorists who were not utilizing a seat belt, 10 for no insurance, six for driving without a license or with one that was expired, three for failing to come to a complete stop at a posted stop sign, three for speeding, three for driving on an expired plate and two for lane violations. Three other citation have been issued for miscellaneous violations.

Drivers are reminded to be aware of roadway construction along Main Street that has forced at least one lane closure near the intersection of Spitz Avenue and Solano Drive. Drivers should also be aware of the city’s cell phone ordinance that prohibits use while operating a motor vehicle.

The city’s cell phone ordinance prohibits engaging in a phone call or creating, sending and reading text messages or e-mail, or otherwise manipulating an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. A citation for the infraction carries a $92 fine.

Engaging in a conversation on a cell phone is permitted within city limits only if the driver is utilizing a hands-free device and its use does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.
