Las Cruces Police Investigate Accident That Killed 18-Month-Old Boy

Las Cruces Police are continuing to investigate Tuesday evening’s pedestrian fatality that claimed the life of an 18-month-old toddler.

Emilio S. Ponce was struck at around 8 p.m. Monday, June 25, by a 1984 Chevrolet pickup driven by his mother, 24-year-old Sylvia Carriana Alvarado, who was moving the truck from one side of her yard to a vacant lot next door.

The toddler was rushed to MountainView Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Preliminary information obtained by investigators appears to indicate that Alvarado did not see her son as he walked toward the roadway at 230 Three Crosses Ave. The toddler may have been trying to follow his mother and stepped into the path of the moving pickup.

The boy’s father, 30-year-old Sergio Ponce Jr., was outside the couple’s residence at the time of the accident.

Traffic investigators are continuing to gather information and are expected to present evidence to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office for a determination on whether or not any charges will be filed.
