Las Cruces Police Issue Over 200 Tickets

Las Cruces Police issued 201 citations this week during three traffic operations along Bataan Memorial West.

The three traffic operations were conducted along Bataan Memorial West near Del Rey Boulevard. The operations were held in two-hour increments beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, 8 a.m. on Wednesday and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The vast majority of the citations issued were for speeding. In the six total hours of the operations 137 citations were issued to drivers for traveling above the posted speed limit. Seven drivers were given citations for violating the city’s cell phone ordinance.

The remaining 57 citations were issued to motorists for various driving infractions.

Motorists are reminded that Las Cruces’ cell phone ordinance prohibits cell phone use while driving within city limits. The ban includes engaging in a phone call or creating, sending and reading text messages or e-mail while operating a motor vehicle. Dialing, texting or otherwise manipulating an electronic device while driving is not considered lawful or safe.

Engaging in a conversation on a cell phone is permitted within city limits only if the driver is utilizing a hands-free device and its use does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.

The Las Cruces Police Department will conduct additional traffic enforcement operations throughout the spring and summer.
