Las Cruces Ranks #10 On List Of Underrated U.S. Cities

Las Cruces is one of the most overlooked cities in America, a new list from DK Eyewitness Travel reports. At number 10 on the list of the 20 most underrated U.S. cities, DK’s in-house travel experts write, “Thanks to its proximity to three natural and historic wonders – the Organ Mountain Desert Peaks, White Sands National Monument, and the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument – Las Cruces has long been an important tourist base. But these days, attractions within the city itself make a longer stay far more appealing. There’s a lively theatre and arts scene (check out the monthly Downtown Ramble), spectacular year-round golf, and tourist trails that highlight local ale and wine producers, and even the humble green chile.”

In acknowledging the designation, Mayor Ken Miyagishima stated, “This rating is a real positive for Las Cruces. The classification means Las Cruces is a national treasure that hasn’t yet been fully discovered. Receiving such global exposure will certainly draw more visitors to our area.”

“The timing is perfect,” interim Economic Development Director Philip San Filippo said. “There are three major events that the article could help generate more outside interest, and tourists; the Las Cruces International Film Festival now underway, the Bataan Death March on the 19th of this month, and the Las Cruces Country Music Festival April 28th through 30th.”

City Manager Stuart Ed said, “Over the years, Las Cruces has been recognized as a Best Place to Retire, a Playful City USA Community, Best Small Metro Area for Business and Careers, Top 20 Boomtowns and more. This is one more giant feather in our hat!”
