Las Cruces Road Rage Suspect Detained after Crash

Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of pointing a handgun at another driver during a road rage incident Thursday evening.

Scott Swearingen, 45, of the 4600 block of Mayfly Road near Organ, N.M., is charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a fourth-degree felony.

At about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a road rage incident on Roadrunner Parkway.

Officers learned that a silver Ford pickup was swerving and traveling extremely slow along Roadrunner Parkway. As another driver passed the Ford pickup, he honked to get the attention of the pickup’s driver. Police learned that the driver of the pickup, later identified as Swearingen, then pointed a handgun at the other motorist and started driving aggressively toward the other vehicle.

An officer responding to the area spotted the Ford pickup heading south on Roadrunner near Lohman Avenue. The officer witnessed as the driver of the Ford ran a red light at Lohman, drove over a center median and continued south behind a nearby business.

The pickup ended up crashing through a rock wall and damaging an electrical transformer.

Swearingen was detained and a black handgun was located inside his pickup. Swearingen was transported to a local hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

He was subsequently booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
