Las Cruces Shooting Suspect Now In Custody

Gustavo Angel Alvarado, the 17-year-old suspect in the Jan. 15 shooting on Karen Avenue that critically injured a neighbor, was detained today at a U.S./Mexico border crossing.

Alvarado was returned to Las Cruces and questioned by Las Cruces Police investigators before being booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center. He is charged with one count of attempted murder and will initially be held without bond.

The victim of the shooting, 34-year-old Pete Limon who resided across the roadway from Alvarado, remains in critical but stable condition at University Medical Center of El Paso. Limon was shot once, in his abdomen, with a shotgun. Police located and recovered the shotgun believed to be used in the shooting in the neighborhood where the incident occurred.

At around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a gunshot victim on the 300 block of Karen Avenue. Officers located Limon who was subsequently airlifted to UMC.

Detectives learned that Limon and a neighbor were in some type of verbal altercation that was apparently witnessed by Alvarado. At some point, Alvarado and Limon exchanged words before Alvarado armed himself with a shotgun. Alvarado is then believed to have fired one round at Limon.

Alvarado fled the area on foot and apparently disposing the shotgun as he ran away. Investigators subsequently learned that Alvarado fled to Mexico and was possibly staying with relatives in Juarez, Mexico.

Detectives remained in contact with Alvarado’s relatives who were cooperative in convincing Alvarado to return to the U.S. Las Cruces Police, with the assistance of deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service and agents from Customs and Border Patrol, detained Alvarado as he returned to the U.S. on Monday, Jan. 26.
