Las Cruces Stabbing Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder

Las Cruces Police arrested the man suspected in Wednesday evening’s stabbing on Lucero Avenue.

Gary “Niko” Szalwinski, 34, of the 100 block of west Lucero Avenue, is charged with a one count each of attempted murder, aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence. All three charges are second-degree felony counts.

At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the 700 block of north Main Street where they found a 21-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his chest, back, head, arms and legs. The victim was in critical condition when he was transported to University Medical Center where he remains hospitalized on Friday.

Detectives learned that the victim was housesitting a friend’s apartment on the 100 block of west Lucero Avenue when Szalwinski, a neighbor, knocked on the door. Detectives learned that when the victim opened the door, Szalwinski entered and stabbed him multiple times.

Szalwinski fled the area and the victim walked a short distance to north Main Street where he was located. Police located Szalwinski shortly thereafter near downtown Las Cruces.

Szalwinski was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
