Las Cruces Suspect Arrested in Apartment Complex Shooting

Las Cruces Police have arrested a teenager suspected of the Sept. 24 shooting that injured a 20-year-old at The Verge apartment complex.

Joshua Jones, 18, of the 3900 block of Lilac Drive, is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a shooting at The Verge apartments, 320 E. Union Ave. Officers learned the victim was transported, by private vehicle, to Memorial Medical Center. The 20-year-old man had injuries to both legs and his right arm. He was subsequently transported to University Medical Center of El Paso with what was later determined to be non-life-threatening injuries.

He has since been released from UMC.

Detectives learned that the victim and several other friends were at the apartment, having a party, late Friday evening into Saturday morning. Sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday, Jones and a few other men arrived but were told the party was over and they were not allowed into the apartment.

The 20-year-old man exited the apartment, to ensure that Jones and the other men left the premises, where a verbal argument escalated quickly. Witnesses told detectives they heard multiple gunshots and discovered their friend, the 20-year-old man, was struck by gunfire.

Through their investigation, detectives determined that Jones was responsible for the shooting.

Jones was arrested Sunday, Oct. 2, and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s currently being held on a $20,000 cash-only bond.
