Las Cruces Sweep Nets 50 Tickets

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – The Las Cruces Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement operation Thursday afternoon and issued 50 citations in just 90 minutes.

Of the 50 citations issued, 20 were for speeding and 15 went to drivers who were using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. The remaining 15 citations were for various traffic violations such as driving without insurance and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Las Cruces' cell phone ordinance went into effect Feb. 5, 2010, and carries a $92 penalty. That penalty includes a $56 fine plus the $36 mandatory court fee.

The ordinance prohibits cell phone use while driving within city limits. The ban includes engaging in a phone call or creating, sending and reading text messages or e-mail while operating a motor vehicle. Searching for or dialing a phone number while driving is not considered safe or lawful.

Engaging in a conversation on a cell phone is permitted within city limits only if the driver is utilizing a hands-free device and the use does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.

Thursday's traffic operation was conducted on Triviz Drive near Entrada del Sol. LCPD will conduct similar traffic enforcement operations within city limits in the near future.
