Las Cruces Woman Arrested For Felony Child Abuse

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police arrested an intoxicated woman who barricaded herself and two children in their home, and told relatives she thought she had killed the kids.

Jennifer Jones, 39, of the 4100 block of Calle Nuestra, is charged with negligent child abuse, a third-degree felony.

Las Cruces Police were called to Jones' residence shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, June 24, after she called 911 to report a head injury. Officers arrived at the home but Jones refused to speak with officers or answer the door. Officers also heard Jones order her children not to answer the door.

One LCPD officer began talking to the woman's two children, ages 5 and 6, and eventually helped them escape out a back door. The children were not physically injured.

The heavily intoxicated Jones, unaware the kids had escaped out a back door, called relatives and said she killed her children. Jones also called 911 again and indicated that she may harm herself. Officers established a perimeter around the home and continued attempts at establishing communication with Jones.

After several minutes Jones exited the front door but was carrying a large hunting knife. She refused officers' commands to drop the knife and was ultimately subdued with the help from an LCPD K-9. No shots were fired and no officers were injured.

Jones was subsequently transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Her children are being cared for by relatives.
