The Latest: Trial Begins For Man Charged In Officer's Death

The Latest on the trial for a New Mexico man charged in the death of a Rio Rancho police officer (all times local):

3:20 p.m.

Prosecutors have shown jurors video of the frantic moments that followed the shooting of a suburban Albuquerque police officer and emergency workers' efforts to render life-saving aid to him.

Law enforcement officers and the widow of Officer Gregg "Nigel" Benner watched through tears Thursday as the video played on a courtroom screen. Authorities say Benner was gunned down after a routine traffic stop on May 25, 2015.

The video came from the lapel camera of a Rio Rancho police officer who was called to testify during the first day of a trial for 29-year-old Anthony Romero.

Romero has been charged in Benner's death.

Romero also was in the courtroom when the roughly 11-minute video was shown.

His trial is expected to last as long as three weeks.

An attorney for the man charged in the shooting death of a suburban Albuquerque police officer has called into question the honesty of one of prosecutors' key witnesses in the case.

Defense attorney Cindy Leos argued before jurors in her opening statement Thursday that Tabitha Littles had lied to authorities during their investigation before taking a plea deal that calls for her to testify against Andrew Romero in the trial.

Romero is accused of shooting Rio Rancho Officer Gregg Benner.

Attorneys on both sides delivered opening arguments in the murder trial Thursday morning.

Authorities say Littles was driving a vehicle pulled over by Benner during a routine traffic stop that preceded his shooting death on May 25, 2015.

The prosecution's opening statement centered mostly on the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.

Attorneys are delivering opening statements in the trial for a New Mexico man charged in the shooting death of a police officer in suburban Albuquerque.

Authorities say Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg "Nigel" Benner was gunned down after a routine traffic stop on May 25, 2015. Andrew Romero, who is 29, was charged with murder in the officer's death.

A woman who authorities say was in the car with Romero also was charged in the shooting but took a plea deal last month in exchange for testifying against Romero during his trial in Los Lunas.

The case was moved from Sandoval County to 40 miles south in Valencia County because of extensive media coverage of the case.

The prosecution's opening statement so far centers on the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
