Latino Week Emphasizes Border Culture On NMSU Campus

  The New Mexico State University CAMP Student Council, Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, and the Associated Students of New Mexico State University present an all-day event for this year’s Latino Week.

“Latino Week is intended to highlight the diversity within the campus,” Juan Esparza, president of CAMP student council said. “This week creates an opportunity to experience other cultures.”

Beginning March 4, the student leaders of the College Assistance Migrant Program Student Council present Danza Azteca, a traditional Mexican-Aztec dance group from noon to 1 p.m.in front of the Corbett Student Union. 

A social from 5-6 p.m. will kick off the evening events in the Corbett Auditorium, with a performance by Mariachi Alma de Jalisco and Ballet Folklorico Tierra del Encanto from 6-7 p.m. 

Award winning slam-poet Joaquin Zihuatanejo is the keynote speaker chosen to perform from7-8 p.m. Zihuatanejo, a National Poetry Slam Finalist, Grand Slam Spoken Word Champion, and HBO Def Poet, has performed throughout North America and Europe.

On March 5, the students of MAES present the movie, “Cinco de Mayo: La Batalla,” at 5:30 p.m. in the Corbett Auditorium. 

“As students in New Mexico, we see many aspects of Latino culture,” Armando Martinez-Cantu, MAES president said. “History, music, dance – these aspects are especially important in a border town like Las Cruces.”
