New Mexico – SANTA FE, N.M. (KRWG) A legislative committee plans to hear from Education Secretary Hanna Skandera about her agency's review of public school enrollment and state financing.
The Legislature Finance Committee has scheduled a hearing Wednesday to get an update from the Public Education Department on its review of school records for special education enrollment and services provided by districts.
Skandera said last month the department found "large, systemic problems" with data reported by some school districts. The department has targeted nine districts for a more extensive audit by an independent firm.
Skandera has questioned whether some schools are "gaming the system" to boost how much state aid they receive under New Mexico's funding formula.
Almost half of New Mexico's state budget goes for financing public schools.
