Lawyer: Breaking Into Davis' Home Cost My Client

Senator Wendy Davis (D)

The attorney for a man convicted of breaking into the home of Democrat Wendy Davis believes her client would have received a lighter prison sentence if the victim hadn't been a public official.

Mamie Johnson said Thursday she's a Democrat who likes the Texas gubernatorial hopeful. But she said Donnell Dickerson, who a jury sentenced to eight years in prison, "ended up with an extra year or two" because of whose house he entered in April 2013.

Johnson said it would have been the same with any public figure, and not just Davis because of her profile.

Davis testified during the sentencing trial in January. Johnson said Davis only testified about facts of the case.

Dallas television station KXAS first reported the break-in, which hadn't been publicly known until now.
