LCPS School Board Chooses Interim Superintendent

Las Cruces Public School Board hired an Interim Superintendent to help start the school year and begin the search for a new superintendent.

Las Cruces Public School Board hired Dr. Steven Sanchez as interim superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools. Sanchez served as Deputy Superintendent for 8 years, retiring from the district in 2015. Sanchez says he looks forward to starting the school year and moving the district forward.

“To keep the great work that is already going on in the district moving,” Sanchez said. “And keeping it on track. There is a lot of wonderful things that are already happening. As an interim your not going to come in and change and make drastic changes, and to help the board hopefully hire a new superintendent and facilitate that process for them.”

Sanchez will receive a salary of $145,000 a year with standard district benefits. Las Cruces School Board President Maria Flores says Sanchez is the best man for the job.

“It’s a transition period,” Flores said. “So, It can be painful for some people, and we just want everyone to be comfortable starting school that everything be functioning and working well, and I’m confident that he will get us through that period.”

Flores says the are beginning the search for the new superintendent and Board members will be coming up with a list of requirements.

“We’re going to come up with criteria,” Flores said. “Each board member will come up with a list of things that are important to him or her, so we’ll start there. And obviously to me it’s all about respecting teachers, and respecting each school building as it’s own community with families and parents and all that are there.”

Flores says they will be consulting with stakeholders in an effort to make the superintendent search transparent.
