At Least 353 Unsolved Murders Since 2009

Houston homicide records examined by the Houston Chronicle show at least 353 unsolved killings in the city since 2009.   While history shows most of those likely won't ever be solved, only about 7 percent of those open cases involve white victims.

Police officials insist race is not a factor in their investigations.

Chief Charles McClelland, who is black, says because 90 percent of the city's homicide victims are minorities, it's no coincidence that most of the unsolved cases also involve minorities.

The number of homicides has averaged about 200 annually, and officials say the number of those cases closed in Houston is about equal to the national average of 65 percent.
