Lujan Retains Speaker Role

Santa Fe – A Democratic challenge to House Speaker Ben Lujan has fizzled as the Legislature returned to work.

Las Cruces Democrat Joseph Cervantes was not nominated for speaker as expected on Tuesday.

Lujan ran against House Republican Leader Tom Taylor. Democrats hold a 37-33 edge in the House.

In a speech to lawmakers, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez proposes to improve New Mexico's public schools by ending social promotion of students and providing financial incentives for the state's best teachers.

Martinez is to outline a package of educational reforms in her State of the State speech to a joint session of the Legislature,
