Man Charged With Las Cruces Home Invasion, Burglary

Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of breaking into the wrong home while trying to collect a debt allegedly owed to him.

Christopher Angel Calzada, 19, is charged with one count each of residential burglary and conspiracy. He also was found to have a warrant for his arrest out of Magistrate Court.

At around 1 a.m. Monday, April 6, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to a home on High Street where three children, ages 3 to 15, were inside.

Detectives learned that Calzada was trying to collect on a $40 loan but went to the wrong house. When he learned that the subject for which he sought did not reside there, Calzada is suspected of breaking at least one window to gain access to the home.

The three children inside hid in a bathroom while the oldest called 911. Detectives believe Calzada then left the residence with a 42-inch TV and a Sony Playstation.

Police located Calzada a couple hours later at his residence.

Police believe Calzada had help from at least two other men who police have yet to positively identify. Anyone who can help identify the men who accompanied Calzada is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip by text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.

Calzada was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.
