A 33-year-old man has been sentenced in Houston to eight years in prison for conspiring to transport immigrants who had entered the country illegally.
U.S. District Judge Melinda Harmon sentenced Lenyn Acosta of Mexico on Friday to 97 months in prison as the leader of a conspiracy involving hundreds of immigrants.
The U.S. Attorney's office says Acosta and others organized the transportation and housing of immigrants passing through the Houston area. Harmon also noted in sentencing Acosta that he had sexually assaulted an immigrant he was harboring.
Acosta is expected to be deported after serving his sentence. Two others involved were also sentenced to lesser prison terms on Friday. The investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations began in July 2012.
