Man Shoots Self After Fleeing Police In NM

Police say a man shot himself in the head after being chased by officers, forcing the closure of a busy Albuquerque street for hours.

Officer Robert Gibbs tells television station KRQE that the chase started Wednesday afternoon when officers received reports about an armed man and some kind of disturbance at a motel.

Officers spotted the man's vehicle and followed him to the intersection of Central Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard. Gibbs says an officer was able to use his patrol car to spin the hatchback into the median.

Police say moments later the man shot himself. He ended up dying at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

Police say no officers fired any shots and no other injuries were reported.

The roadway remained closed late Wednesday while officers investigated.
