Man Suspected Of Striking Two Officers

Las Cruces Police

A man suspected of striking two Las Cruces Police officers has been charged with a pair of felonies.

Adam Wayne Schmidt, 30, is charged with two counts of battery upon a peace officer and one count of resisting an officer. The battery charges are fourth-degree felony offenses.

At around 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a fight between three men on the 1100 block of east Montana Avenue. Officers spoke with neighbors who described what they saw but no fight was observed by police.

One of the LCPD officers then spotted Schmidt trying to open the doors of a marked police unit. The officers confronted Schmidt who was acting suspiciously.

As one of the officers closed distance on Schmidt the suspect began throwing punches, striking the officer’s head. Schmidt then went to the ground but refused to comply with commands.

A short while later, after Schmidt had been taken into custody and while officers were attempting to remove him from the back of a police unit, he kicked another LCPD officer.

The officers were not seriously injured.

Schmidt was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $50,000.
