Martin Luther King Day Breakfast Stresses The Importance Of Equality

http://youtu.be/yWaAS8vBVhY

The Dona Ana County NAACP branch held a breakfast to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and discuss the equality issues the country continues to face today.

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

The breakfast began with a reading of Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream Speech.’ Curtis Rosemond, President of the Dona Ana County branch of the NAACP says that Martin Luther King’s words and hope for the future are still relevant today.

“The fight has not been done yet,” Rosemond said. “There is still a lot of fighting to be done. And we must continue to struggle, and push, and fight forward to have justice and equality for all.”

The theme of the breakfast was ‘All in for Justice and Equality.’ And Rosemond says the NAACP doesn’t just fight for racial equality anymore.

“We’re fighting for equality for voting rights, women’s rights, LGBT rights, education rights, health rights,” Rosemond said.  “Wherever there is an equality issue, we’ll fight for that. That’s what it means, Equality for everyone.”

He says that everyone can help to be a part of the change in their everyday lives.

“Speak up, talk about it,” Rosemond said. “Talk to your friends, your neighbors, to your family. Make sure everyone understands that we are only asking for one thing, equality for all Americans. Not one set of American’s, but all Americans.”

This was the 5th annual Martin Luther King Day Breakfast, and it has continued to grow every year.
