New Mexico – Gov. Susana Martinez stumbled over a passage in her inaugural speech and laughed when she immediately caught the verbal slip-up.
Martinez, a career prosecutor, inadvertently said "lawmakers" rather than "lawbreakers."
In pledging to enforce tough ethnical standards during her administration, Martinez said: "Lawmakers will have no stronger adversary."
But when she finished the sentence, she realized the mistake. She apologized, chuckled and repeated the sentence correctly, saying: "Lawbreakers will have no stronger adversary."
In her speech on Saturday, the Republican governor appealed for unity and a bipartisan approach to New Mexico's problems.
Democrats hold majorities in both chambers of the Legislature.
