Martinez To Make Racetrack Decision

By KRWG News

Albuquerque – The New Mexico State Fair Commission says it will leave a decision on a new lease for The Downs at Albuquerque Racetrack and Casino to the administration of Gov.-elect Susana Martinez, who takes office with the new year.

The commission has canceled a Wednesday meeting to consider a new lease for the track at the state fairgrounds in Albuquerque, known as Expo New Mexico.

Expo general manager Craig Swagerty says he canceled the meeting because he didn't expect to get a quorum of the commission before the end of the year.

Swagerty says Expo New Mexico negotiated a good deal and will present the agreement to Martinez's administration.

It calls for a 25-year lease and an increase the lease amount.

The Downs currently pays $2.2 million annually.
