Martinez Prompts Spaceport Resignation

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – New Mexico spaceport director Rick Homans has announced his resignation Wednesday, saying he'd been ordered by Gov. Susana Martinez's administration to step down.

A spokesman for the governor had no immediate comment.

Some Spaceport America board members expressed concerns about Martinez's move and questioned whether Homans' departure was good for the $209 million spaceport project as it goes through a key stage.

During an emergency meeting in Las Cruces, Homans read a lengthy resignation statement, saying he'd hoped to stay longer.

He says he has embraced the project but it is clear that Gov. Martinez is not embracing him.

The resignation is effective at the close of business Friday.
