New Mexico – Legislation signed by Gov. Susana Martinez will open the door for returning service members and others without college credit to apply to become state police officers.
Until now, New Mexico mandated that applicants have at least 30 hours of college credits to be hired and they had to accumulate more credits on a schedule approved by the chief.
The new secretary of the state Department of Public Safety, Gorden Eden, says the system excluded countless hard-working people who chose military service instead of college.
With the law now signed, Eden says the department is opening up a "big door" for people who have served their country.
He calls the new system Transitions with Honor.
Eden hopes easing the college credit requirement will benefit the state and military veterans.
