New Mexico – New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez wants to know if state employees really need state cars and cell phones to do their jobs.
The new governor has issued a moratorium on new state vehicle purchases and is asking each department to review its use of state vehicles as she tries to cut state spending.
Martinez spokesman Scott Darnell says she's also ordered her cabinet secretaries to figure out which of more than 4,300 state workers now with cell phones really need them to do their jobs.
The General Services Administration tells the Santa Fe New Mexican that the phones cost taxpayers $2.6 million a year.
The state's fleet includes thousands of cars, including hundreds designated as 'take-home' cars that workers use for commuting.
