Memorial For Man Shot By Albuquerque Police

3/16/14 fatal shooting of James Boyd--Albuquerque Police Department video

A homeless camper who was shot by Albuquerque police in the Sandia foothills is being remembered.

A memorial service for 38-year-old James Boyd was held Sunday at Saint Martin's Hospitality Center in Albuquerque.

A procession to the Sandia Gardens followed.

Family members have requested that donations be made in Boyd's memory to Saint Martin's.

Authorities say Boyd was shot March 16 by police while camping in the Sandia Hills. A helmet camera video showed Boyd was turning away when police fired.

The shooting ignited protests and sparked an FBI investigation.

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday released a report blasting the police department for a pattern of excessive force.
