Mesilla Basilica Reopens

A Roman Catholic church that's a popular stop for tourists in southern New Mexico has reopened with some much needed upgrades.

The Basilica of San Albino in Mesilla reopened Friday for 5:30 p.m. Mass after getting some cosmetic retouching.

Changes to the church include energy-efficient lighting and electrical systems, a better air conditioning system, new carpet and refurbished pews.

The church has been closed since May 7 for the renovation project.

The basilica was dedicated in 1908 but a church has stood on Mesilla Plaza since the 1850s.

The Rev. Richard Catanach says monthly electricity bills should be smaller now.
