Mesilla – The marshal's department in the southern New Mexico town of Mesilla is getting a $184,000 border security grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
That's the word from Carlos Castaneda, border liaison for the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security.
The funds are designed to help the small Mesilla department become a a second tier of defense for border security.
Marshal Jeff Gray says the grant is equal to more than half his department's total budget.
He says the grant makes his five officers available for operations in Dona Ana County involving homeland security.
Gray says he'd like to use the money for cameras and computers for patrol vehicles, computer printers and two new vehicles.
