Mesquite Neighborhood Learning Center To Close; DACC Considers Options For Students

Efforts are underway to find a new home for educational services provided in a low-income area of Las Cruces.

Since 2001…the Mesquite Neighborhood Learning Center has provided services through Dona Ana Community College at a Tornillo Street building owned by the city of Las Cruces.  The college building lease expires at the end of May and the city is planning to locate an afterschool program in the building.

A spokesman says College President Dr. Renay Scott is considering new options for students including the DACC workforce center, a little more than a mile away from the current facilities.  The spokesman says a decision is expected in the next several weeks.

A 2014 KRWG documentary profiled the Learning Center.  Director Luly Valencia-Glenn talked about the services, including classes that help students learn English as a second language and complete their GED.

The documentary also included comments from Emma Olivia Lara….classes at the center helped Lara achieve her GED and she went on to higher education.  We talked with her at the center…where she was giving back…serving as a math tutor.

School officials will meet with students at the Mesquite Neighborhood Learning Center Tuesday, May 5 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm to answer questions about completing their education.
