LAS CRUCES, NM - The Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, TX and the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico are pleased to announce a free performance by distinguished Mexican Mezzo-soprano Maria Luisa Tamez. She will be accompanied on the piano by Maestro Angel Rodríguez. This recital will take place at 7 pm onSaturday, April 18 at the Rio Grande Theatre located at 211 N. Main Street.
Born in Mexico City, Tamez began her career as a Soprano winning first place in the prestigious National Singing Contest "Carlo Morelli" in 1981. The following year she was chosen by Maestro Eduardo Mata to star in four consecutive productions along the brilliant baritone Guillermo Sarabia.
She has sung as a soloist with many of the most renowned orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony, the German Chamber Academy, the Long Beach Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and under the baton of great conductors as Eduardo Mata, Guido Maria Guida, Enrique Patrón de Rueda, Gunter Herbig, Anton Guadagno, Enrique Batiz, Theo Alcántara, Fernando Lozano, Johannes Goritsky, Enrique Diemecke and Luis Herrera de la Fuente.
Cio-Cio San, from Madam Butterfly, has been one of the most significant roles in her career. Tamez represented Mexico in the Madam Butterfly World Competition in Tokyo, winning the top prize over one hundred seventy five participants worldwide. She has sung more than 300 performances of the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven and various vocal symphonies from Mahler, Orff, Poulenc, Debussy, Mozart, among others. She has sung in major theaters of New Zealand, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, El Salvador, United States, United Kingdom, Portugal, France, Spain, and Germany. Her recent career highlights include performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where she sang La Vida Breve by Manuel de Falla, as well as her presentation at the Hollywood Bowl, where she sang for 10,000 spectators.
Born in Cuba and living in Mexico, pianist and composer Angel Rodríguez began his musical studies at age five. After an important music trajectory, he completed his piano studies with Maestro Gonzalo Gutierrez, and orchestra conduction at the School of Music Life and Movement Centro Cultural Ollin Yoliztli under the supervision of Maestro Gonzalo Romeu.
Throughout his 25 years of career, he has been pianist at the Opera of Cuba and at the Fine Arts Opera in Mexico, holds over 80 titles in his repertoire, and collaborated with artists such as Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Anna Netrebko, and many others. He has also been accompanist of notable singers such as Ramón Vargas, Rolando Villazón, Javier Camarena, Joseph Calleja, Nathalie Manfrino, Franco Vassallo, Ailyn Perez, Alfredo Daza, Eglise Gutiérrez, Fernando de la Mora, Cassandra Zoe, Rosario Andrade, Timothy Robert Blevins Rebeca Olvera, Arturo Chacón, Mary Katzarava, Carlos Almaguer, Joseph Bross, Dario Solari, and many others.
