Mining Company And State GOP Boosts Republican In Land Commissioner Race

New Mexico – Republican Matthew Rush has spent more than twice as much money as Democrat Ray Powell in the race for land commissioner during the past month.

Rush reported Tuesday spending of $153,500. Powell spent $56,900 since early September. Advertising accounted for 90 percent of each candidate's expenditures.

Rush collected $93,700 in contributions and Powell raised about $33,400.

Intercontinental Potash Corp. contributed $10,000 to Rush and $5,000 to Powell. The company has a lease with the Land Office to mine potash in southeastern New Mexico.

The state Republican Party gave $25,000 to Rush and the Eddy County GOP contributed $10,000.

Rush had cash-on-hand of $63,200 as of Oct. 4 and Powell had about $47,600.
