More Women Using VA System In New Mexico

By KRWG News

New Mexico – The Department of Veterans Affairs says more female veterans in New Mexico are taking advantage of a program designed to provide primary health care for women within the VA's system.

The VA says it offers a full range of services through the Women's Comprehensive Care Clinic at the VA hospital in Albuquerque and care at 11 clinics across the state.

New Mexico VA Health Care System women veterans program manager Carole Donsbach says veterans can receive the same care at the community-based clinics due to the expansion of telemedicine combined with care at each clinic.

New Mexico has an estimated 16,000 female veterans.

The VA says more than 2,600 receive care at the women's clinic, and that clinic appointments rose 42 percent from October 2009 to March 2010.
