Mosquito That Carries Zika Found In Dona Ana And Three Other New Mexico Counties

A species of mosquito that is capable of transmitting the Zika virus has been found in a fourth New Mexico county.

Health officials announced Thursday that one of the two types of mosquitoes capable of spreading the Zika virus was trapped in Roosevelt County, located on New Mexico's eastern border. Zika carriers have also been found in Dona Ana, Eddy and Chaves counties.

Researchers plan to place mosquito traps in 24 of New Mexico's 33 counties this summer in order to help health officials plan for the possibility of a local Zika outbreak.

There have been three Zika cases in New Mexico, all of which were acquired outside the U.S.
