Murder Suspect Surrenders

A Salem man accused of fatally shooting a 17-year-old earlier this year surrendered to authorities this weekend in Santa Teresa.

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators received information that Efren Rey, 27, wanted to turn himself in at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry on Sunday, Sept. 8. Rey had reportedly been in Mexico since the July 27 shooting.

According to a report, Rey showed up uninvited in Rodey to a birthday party for a 16-year-old girl. Witnesses said Rey was arguing with several people before he reportedly fired a handgun into the air. Rey then pointed the gun at 17-year-old Fernando Morales and allegedly fired it once, hitting Morales in the face. Morales died while being transported to the hospital.

Investigators met Rey at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry shortly after 7 p.m. He was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $150,000 secured bond.
