Nachison: Change Comes Locally, Ideas Differ

Commentary:  I want to thank the County Election staff for running a smooth process including some fiercely contested offices on June 7.  From six convenience centers for early voting to 60 on primary day, county staff and volunteers were tested to the limit.  As a poll watcher during both early voting and on Tuesday 6/7 things were smooth with only minor glitches - and I understand some lines.  Thanks to everyone who participated in the hard work part of voting - candidates and staff, volunteers and county employees.

My special appreciation goes to District 35 winner Angelica Rubio with her real ideas.  A great win in a three-way race to replace State Rep. Steinborn - and his upward mobility in winning District 36's State Senate candidate position.

The 2016 democratic primaries produced some interesting results which portend change in our County Commission (DAC).  My condolences to Commissioners Hancock and Garcia for their losses.  With thanks to almost all working for increased turnout - which was noticeable, congrats.  Still only about 32% of party-affiliated voters voted - some 23% of DAC registered voters.  Independents - some 27% in DAC - are locked out in NM primaries.

The County Commission in 2017?  Many say change is in the wind that may portend, among other things, less attention to mental health issues, more dollars for security and the most obnoxious idea, possible privatization of prisons.

What does this all mean?  More attention is needed to Commission meetings.  Please come out and have your say. Get with your Councillors regularly on issues.  Organize and organize - come out for what is best.  County change at this point is - we shall see…   Onward to Nov 8.
