Navajo Officials Mull Election Amid Confusion

Navajo election officials failed to decide Friday whether to follow an order by the tribe's top court to postpone a presidential race that's less than two weeks away.

Navajo Board of Election Supervisor Lenora Fulton says the board will reconvene Monday at 9 a.m.

The Navajo Supreme Court also ordered Chris Deschene off the ballot.

Deschene had appealed to the court following a challenge over whether he was fluent in Navajo, a requirement under tribal law.

Several branches of tribal government have been weighing how to proceed with a race that has become increasingly embroiled in confusion amid a debate involving the tribe's language.

The Navajo Council approved emergency legislation early Friday that would effectively erase the requirement.
