Navajo To Review Study Of Schools Takeover

Courtesy: US Dept. of Education

Navajo Nation education officials will discuss the results of a study on whether tribes are prepared to take over schools that have historically been run by the federal government.

The Navajo Nation Department of Dine Education will hold a public meeting Monday morning at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Arizona.

Officials say the plan is part of the effort to have the department lead 31 Bureau of Indian Education schools and 35 grant schools on the reservation.

The Navajo Nation Teacher Education Consortium, which includes faculty members from the University of New Mexico and Northern Arizona University, conducted the study.

The U.S. government finances more than 180 Native American schools, some of which are considered some of the nation's most underperforming.
