Roland Miller’s book Abandoned in Place: Preserving America’s Space History, captures a close look at the places and structures that played an important role in the United State's race to space.
Dr. Beth O’Leary, NMSU Professor Emerita of Anthropology is a contributor to the book; she recently was in-studio to share her work involved with this book on KRWG-TV’s Fronteras-A Changing America.
In the interview, Dr. O’Leary discusses sites in New Mexico’s that contributed to the Space Race. She says that there are plenty of places in the state that were vital to space exploration.
“Here in New Mexico we have many sites that contributed to the launch, beginning with the Roswell sites which Robert Goddard created to test the first rockets. We also have White Sands Missile Range where Wernher von Braun and his team came over after World War Two and essentially created the America’s missile project, and it was the V2 and its decedents that launched those guys to the moon,” says O'Leary.
